Think Won 2011 Pacemaker Award
For the second year in a row, Think magazine won the prestigious Pacemaker award held by Associated Collegiate Press. Art Director Allison Maze won first place for cover design, which isn’t computer-generated. The cover was initially handwritten on a blackboard and then photographed. Think‘s Senior Editor Holly Worthy, Senior Photographer Afsaneh Zaeri and writer Jeff Glaze received honorable mentions.
Think also won the contest sponsored by the Magazine Division of the American Educators of Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). The awards are:
- First Place: General Excellence (for the fourth year in a row)
- First Place: Design
- Second Place: Editorial
This is what the AEJMC judges have to say about Think:
“This magazine does an incredible job of speaking to its progressive readership with hard-hitting articles, investigative journalism, news reporting and socially-conscious service articles. Articles, art, design and illustrations are all consistently wonderful. The articles are international in their scope, yet often speak to Midwestern readers with local tie-ins, regional interviewees, etc.. Sidebars, call-outs and photos all lend themselves to a great deal of interactivity. Excellent magazine that could compete on newsstands with the likes of Mother Jones and Utne Reader—no easy task.”
“There was actual hard, investigative journalism in here.”
On design:
“Think eschews gimmicks in favor of a less-is-more approach; the design is
energetic but it never overwhelms the reader or distracts from the content.”
Think continues to dominate the field of student magazine production amidst competitors from schools like Syracuse, Missouri, Kent State, Oregon and Mississippi.
The spring 2011 issue of Think magazine was a collaborative production of magazine and news/internet seniors at Drake University. I was one of the three senior editors involved in the making of this award-winning magazine.

Nice Portfolios! Did you do all layouts and text?
Yup. It’s not just a portfolio now I guess. It’s my blog, my portfolio, resume, and everything in one. Very convenient. Just need more updates
Nice compositions, contrast between texts and images. Ways to go, girl!
