LOKATAS: Creating A New Worldview

The Authors

I have many names.

For 18 years, I had been known only as Monsicha Hoonsuwan or Saimai. They are the Thai names my parents gave me. Monsicha means Love. Hoonsuwan means Golden Cloud. And Saimai, well, means Cotton Candy.

In the online world, I have been known as scaredzone. My e-mail accounts are scaredzone. My forum usernames are scaredzone. My miscellaneous accounts all display the name scaredzone. And basically, if you Google scaredzone, all you can find is me.

Now, here’s the complicated part. In the U.S., I am known as Sam.

One word: Sam.

Sam isn’t Samantha nor Samuel. Sam is just Sam. And if you are wondering, Sam isn’t my real name; I invented it. I invented it because people find it hard to pronounce my real name. I invented it because the translation of my actual nickname Saimai sounds a bit too inappropriate. Imagine finding a person whose name is Cotton Candy. Would you think of her as a student or a, erm, you know what I mean?

But thanks to Meg Cabot and her All American Girls, I finally found the perfect name. Sam is an artistic, rebellious protagonist in Cabot’s book. She had a long-lasting impression on me. And even though All American Girls 2 destroyed my faith in Sam, the name stuck. I started telling all my non-Thai friends the new name. Sometimes it creates a lot of questions such as, Why do you have a guy’s name, but Sam works. Sam is easy to remember.

But whichever names you want to call me, Sam is still Monsicha Hoonsuwan. Monsicha Hoonsuwan is still Saimai. And Saimai is still scaredzone. We are one.

  1. Sam, you sound like an interesting, world-wise person. I read your article about Middle Eastern cuisine and Iraqi refugees.

I’m wondering if you have any opinions on arranged marriage? I’m looking for people to help bring a world-view to my blog, since we’re discussing arranged marriages on my teen-friendly blog.

You may not be a teen yourself (and that’s okay), but would you be willing to add your two bits? It sounds like you have a very broad world-view and a well-traveled background. That’s just what I’m looking for. I want to open the minds of my teen readers to opinions outside their high school cliques.

Thanks for considering it. I hope you drop by my blog and add your educated opinion. http://passinglovenotes.wordpress.com

  2. Hi, Sam. I enjoyed your article about your name. Very creative. How did you come up with Sam. Why not Monica? Or Mony? Or Icha? I don’t know what you should use, and I’m not about to tell you what to use. I think Sam is a good name, an name fine enough for a loyal hound. I’m not calling you a dog, nor a hound, I really liked my childhood friend and he loved his biscuits.
Sam also reminds me of the Dr. Seuss book, “Green Eggs and Ham.”
I like your name Sam she is,
I like to hear it in a wizz,
It jumps out with a proud sound,
It reminds me of my pet hound.

  3. Holy Smokes, Sam!
This is an awesome website/blog! Loved your post about your name.
    I blog about Mongolia,
I also use my blog title Mongol Angle in place of name.
My name is also hard to pronounce, and I have lots of aliases.
I have lots to learn from you!
In Mongolian, Golden Cloud is "Altan Uul" and Cotton Candy is "Khuusun chikher".

    • :) That is so cute! Now I know my name in Mongol, and I'm super excited. So what is love in Mongol? 'Cause then I would be able to introduce myself as whatever-love-is-in-Mongol Altan Uul, whose nickname is Khuusun chikher. I don't know why, but it makes me think I'm hot.

Haha. Anyway, you've got to tell me your name too, 'cause I can't find any info on you blog—which makes me feel uneven :) . Just kidding. I would just call you Natso. And thank you for the compliment. I'm trying to sort out all the mess in this design right now, so things will be switching around for a while. Hope you don't mind. By the way, you've gotta be one of the funniest people I've known—telling from your blog ^_^.
